A Declarative Rule-Based Environment for Agent Modelling Systems

In: The Seventh Conference of the European Social Simulation Association, ESSA 2011.

This paper presents a snapshot of the Declarative Rule-based Agent Modelling System (DRAMS), which has been developed with the goal of providing declarative rule engine functionality to agent-based simulation models. While the incentive for this effort was to allow stakeholders in policy modelling activities to better understand and thus be more deeply involved in the modelling and simulation of policy processes, the approach chosen appears to be valuable for many other application areas. After introducing the context in which DRAMS is developed in order to underpin some of the requirements and related design decisions presented subsequently, the software architecture, implementation and user interfaces are described in some detail. Finally, a simple epidemic model to illustrate the use of DRAMS is presented.
